Charlie Hebdo is a satire magazine that has recently came under attack by terrorists. The radical extremists that came into their offices murdered many of their writers. But in order for society to deal with this issue is to not let the extremists scare us into submission. If they can scare us then their mission was a success. The people of Paris have done an outstanding job of letting their voices be heard. Americans need to take note of this and follow in their footsteps in the future. The reality is that these extremists aren't going anywhere and they've made it clear that they don't like us or our beliefs. Not being violent wont change anything, they've sent us many videos of them executing Americans. So the question is why cant we do the same? Most of them dont fear death let alone jail time.

Kayla Evans I chose to read about Ferguson. Micheal Brown, an unarmed African American teenager was shot and killed by a white police officer on August 9th, 2014 in Ferguson Missouri . After the decision was made not to indict Mr. Wilson a wave of anger occurred among those who had gathered outside the Ferguson police department. Buildings were set on fire, businesses were destroyed, cars were burnt all because of the decision. This concerned other people because some thought the police officer was being racist, while some thought the police officer was just using self defense. I wonder what really happened. You hear a bunch of stories on the news and on the internet but whats really true? Was Micheal Brown guilty of a crime? Was the police officer really just using self defense?
The book I was reading is called, Accomplice, by Eireann Corrigan. Its about two high school girls who go to extremes so they can stand out on their college applications, and get scholarship money. One of the friends, Chloe, hides in her grandmothers basement and pretends to be kidnapped. As she is hiding the other friend, Fin, has to act like her best friend has actually disappeared. Along the way they went through many changes concerning their friendship. They started off being the two best friends that were inseparable, they did everything together, they were even next door neighbors. While Chloe was hiding out, Fin had a hard time living without her best friend by her side every day. In fact it made her think, “What if Chloe and I never met?”. While I was reading this part of the book I wondered what my life would be like if I never met my best friend, how would I be different? or would I be the same person I am today?
The idea of distance comes into play at the end of the book. While the girls are pulling off their prank, they don't get to see each other 24/7 like they are used to. They believe that when chloe comes home their friendship will be stronger than ever, but thats not the case. When Chloe returns home her parents become very strict. She gets home schooled, so her and Fin don't get to go to school together. They still see each other at home but not as frequent as they used to. Then Chloe and her family move out of the city, and thats when everything starts to fall apart. The distance between Fin and Chloe grows and their friendship gets worse. I could connect to this part of the book because i've lost a couple of close friends due to distance. |
